After retiring, we moved from Ohio to Texas last year to be closer to 6 of our 8 grandchildren. My mother had my sister and me learning to cook with her from the time we were in grade school. I entered my first baking contest when I was in the 8th grade. I won at city level and went on to state. There was a pie bake off and points were given for taste, appeareance and also for neatness while preparing the cherry pie. They told me I failed in the neatness category. I still smile thinking about my mother telling the judges that had nothing to do with the finished product.
