I am a child of the south--Mom's from Louisiana, Dad's from Arkansas. We lived in TX for 12 years before my parents became protestant missionaries to Ghana, west Africa, and then Brussels, Belgium. My mom and grandmothers were great, from-scratch Southern cooks, which has informed my own cooking, but living in Africa and Europe and being exposed to the myriad food cultures found in both areas, both indigenous and in the expatriated communities there have made curry and cumin some of my most-used kitchen spices! I love to tweak recipes, and have a HUGE sweet tooth!
