I remember standing in a chair at the stove to scramble an egg. The lst thing I remember learning to make was cornbread. The first meal I cooked by myself I was eleven. My mama was in the hospital and I wanted to impress my daddy. It was probably pretty awful, but he ate it anyway. My mama worked, so by the time I was 14, I was responsible for cooking supper after school on her work days. My paternal grandmother was just the best country cook ever, with or without a recipe. My other grandmother, bless her heart, cooked everything on high. My mama and my daughter are both very good cooks.
