I have been making Salmon chowder for many years. It is a warm, filling and satisfying thing that we really enjoy. My recipe for Salmon Chowder is the same as my recipe for Clam Chowder. The only exception is that I use Clam Juice in Clam Chowder. We love Salmon and I try to make sure to cook enough so we have extra for the chowder. If you don't have salmon to cook you can use canned salmon. We hope you enjoy our simple chowder as much as we do :)

Ingredients For salmon chowder

  • 3 slice
    bacon - or 2 tbsp bacon-up
  • 1/2 c
    chopped celery
  • 1/2 c
    chopped onion
  • 1/2 c
    sliced fresh mushrooms - optional
  • 1/2 c
    chopped carrots
  • 3
baby red potatoes or 6 red or yellow petite potatoes - cubed
  • chicken broth - enough to cover the vegies
  • 2 Tbsp
    flour
  • 1 c
    chicken broth
  • milk or cream
  • 6 oz
    cooked salmon

How To Make salmon chowder

  • 1
Cook bacon until crispy in large pot. Remove when done but save the bacon grease. If you don't have bacon, use 2 Tbsp Bacon-Up
  • 2
Place the cut celery, onion, mushrooms and carrots into the bacon grease and cook over medium heat until the vegies are crisp tender - be sure to stir frequently so they do not burn.
  • 3
Add the potatoes and broth. Add just enough broth to cover the vegies then cook over med low until vegies are done to your liking. Add small amounts of water if necessary while the vegies are cooking.
  • 4
When vegies are done sprinkle with the flour. Stir and cook for 3 minutes to incorporate and lightly brown the flour. Add 1 cup of chicken broth and stir. When it begins to thicken start adding milk or cream in small amounts until you get the consistency you prefer. We like our chowder to be quite thick.
  • In the pot

Finally add the salmon, stir and heat through. I like to cut the salmon into chunks or flake it in large pieces. It will break apart a bit once it is in the chowder.

Serve hot with some crispy bacon bits on top for garnish. We enjoy adding a few saltine cracker or oyster crackers to our bowls of chowder.
