I hope you will enjoy this lovely versatile soup. The tomato, bean, ham and hot pepper sauce create a lovely comforting flavor. Place the bottle on the table, for tweaking. If the soup is too subtle for your taste, add more hot sauce. This soup is easy to vary: change the canned beans and use dry if you prefer, you could also add an assortment of beans. Use a pork hock instead of the ham bone or add some baby spinach at the end.

Ingredients For cajun inspired ham and bean soup

  • 1 - 1 1 /2 c
    canned great northern beans, rinsed
  • 5 c
    water or chicken stock
  • 2 c
    canned diced tomatoes (do not drain)
  • 1
    leftover ham bone
  • 1 c
    coarsely chopped ham, optional
  • 1 lg
    sweet onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 c
    coarsely chopped green pepper
  • 1/2 c
    coarsely chopped celery
  • 2 clove
    garlic, finely minced
  • 1/4 - 1/2 tsp
    freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp
    bottled hot pepper sauce
  • 1/4 - 1/2 tsp
    fine sea salt

How To Make cajun inspired ham and bean soup

    Add all ingredients except salt and hot sauce into a large pot.

    Bring to a rolling boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer for 3 hours.

    Remove the ham bone from the soup, and when it is cooled, cut the meat from the bone and add it back into the soup. Reheat.

    When ready to serve, stir in the hot pepper sauce, taste and season with salt.
