1 tablespoon olive oil

1 large onion, chopped
•
3 cloves garlic, finely minced
•
1/3 cup light or dark brown sugar
•
2 tablespoons canned chipotle chiles (see note)
•
1 teaspoon salt
•
1/2 teaspoon pepper
•
2-3 pounds tomatillos (about 20-25 tomatillos), husks removed, washed well, and cut in half (or quartered if they are large)

1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
•
