This was my favorite growing up. It was a New Year's Eve tradition (and still is) but mom cooked it a few times during the year as well.

Think you don't like cabbage? We bet this Southern fried cabbage will change your mind. It's tender and cooks to golden perfection. Frying it in bacon grease adds tons of flavor, while the white vinegar creates the perfect contrast with a sharp tang. A delicious side dish year-round, but especially good for New Year's Day.

Ingredients For southern fried cabbage

  • 1 lg
    cabbage
  • 1 lg
    onion
  • 12 oz
    bacon, chopped
  • 1/4 c
    vegetable oil
  • 1/4 c
    distilled vinegar
  • salt and pepper, to taste

How To Make southern fried cabbage

  • Cabbage cut and onions sliced.

    Cut up the cabbage and slice the onions into rings.
  • Frying bacon in a pot.

    In a Dutch oven, fry the bacon until crisp. Remove the bacon and set aside, saving the grease.
  • Adding oil to bacon grease.

    Add the oil to the grease.
  • Cabbage and onions added to the oil.

    Add the cabbage and onions. Fry, tossing and turning every so often.
  • Cooking until slightly brown.

    Cook the cabbage down until clear and brown in spots. This takes about 1 hour.
  • Adding vinegar to cooked cabbage.

    Once the cabbage is cooked, then add the vinegar and mix well.
  • Salt, pepper, and bacon added to the pot.

    Add the salt, pepper, and cooked bacon. Allow to cook another 10 minutes or so.
