Ingredients For slow cooker bavarian red cabbage

  • 1 sm
    head red cabbage (washed & coarsely sliced)
  • 1 md
    onion, chopped
  • 3
    tart apples (granny smith are good) cored and quartered
  • 2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 c
    hot water
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp
    sugar
  • 1/2 c
    red wine vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp
    bacon grease or butter

How To Make slow cooker bavarian red cabbage

  • 1
    Place all ingredients in crock pot in order listed. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours (High 3-4 hours)

    Stir well before serving.

    NOTE: may add any or all of the following, if you like: 1/4 tsp. freshly ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. grounds cloves 1/2 tsp. caraway seeds (optional)

    This should fit a 4-5 qt slow cooker For larger (6 qt) crock pot, use large head of cabbage and add 1/2 C of apple juice
