Ingredients For home-style butterbeans

  • 8 slice
    bacon, diced (see note)
  • 1 md
    onion, minced
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 - 16 oz. pkg
    butter beans, frozen
  • 12 c
    water
  • 1/4 c
    butter, cold
  • 2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    black pepper

How To Make home-style butterbeans

  • 1
    Cook bacon & onion in a large dutch oven over medium heat 7 minutes. Add brown sugar & cook; stirring occasionally, 2 minutes or until sugar is dissolved. Stir in butter beans & butter until butter is melted & beans are thoroughly coated. Stir in 12 C. water.

    Bring to a boil over medium-high heat; reduce heat to low & simmer, stirring occasionally, 2 hours or until beans are very tender & liquid is thickened & just below top of beans. Stir in salt & pepper.
