This recipe comes from my maternal grandmother. It's been served at our family holiday meals for, gosh, 50 years or more. My grandmother is not with us anymore (I miss you, Grama)...but her peas live on. These sound weird but taste amazing....and sadly, they are NOT low-cal. C'est la vie.

Ingredients For grama's peas

  • 4 can
    (15 oz. cans) early june peas -- like le sueur brand
  • 1 lg
    green pepper
  • 6 Tbsp
    butter, cold
  • approx 1
    pint heavy cream
  • salt
  • black pepper

How To Make grama's peas

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • 2
    Slice green pepper into 1/2-inch thick rings.
  • 3
    Open and drain cans of peas. Dump them into 13x9 baking dish.

    Arrange pepper slices, evenly, over peas.
  • 5
    Pour cream over peas until peas are just covered.
  • 6
    Cut cold butter into small pieces and dot over surface of peas.

    Season with salt and pepper.

    Bake for about an hour until cream has thickened and peas are sort of browned on top.
