Ingredients For russian sweet and sour cabbage

    butter
  • 4 c
    onions, thinly sliced
  • 2/3 c
    red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 c
    applesauce
  • 2 Tbsp
    sugar
  • 2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    ground black pepper
  • 1
    bay leaf
  • 1/8 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 1
    red cabbage (about 2 pounds)
  • 1
    apple, golden delicious, peeled, cored, sliced thin
  • 1/2 c
    apple juice

How To Make russian sweet and sour cabbage

  • 1
    Melt butter in heavy pan over medium low heat. Saute onions until soft. Add next 7 ingredients, heat to almost boiling.

    Add cabbage, stir until cabbage starts to wilt. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is crisp-tender, 17 minutes. Add apple and cook 5 more minutes.
