I've tried many recipes to oven bake french fries. Most of have been good.......but to me there's just something special about fries that are actually fried. This is a simple and basic way to fry them on the stove top.

Ingredients For stovetop fries

  • 1 lg
    russet potato (about 8 oz)
  • 4 Tbsp
    oil
  • salt, optional

How To Make stovetop fries

  • 1
Cut the potato into 1/2-inch slices. (You can peel it or not. I don't usually peel mine). Cut each slice lengthwise into 1/2-inch strips.
  • 2
Heat the oil in a large frying pan on medium-high heat. After 1 minute, carefully put 1 potato strip in the pan. If it immediately begins to sizzle, add the rest of the potatoes. If it doesn't sizzle, wait another 30 seconds and try a second strip. If the oil isn't hot enough, the potatoes will stick to the bottom of the pan.

Fry for 1 minute and turn them over with a spatula. Continue turning them every minute or so until they have become golden brown. If they start to burn, turn the heat down to medium.

Drain the fries on paper towels, sprinkle on some salt and serve.
