Not sure where I found this recipe but it is a favorite! I did change the recipe up to work for me. The ingredients listed are with my changes. Feel free to change it up to work for you. You can use fresh veggies or canned, ground beef or ground round. I used canned mixed vegetables with carrots, beans and corn. Very tasty!!

Ingredients For shepherds pie

  • 1 lb
    pound ground chuck beef
  • 4 oz
    can of mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 c
    onion, chopped
  • 2 lg
    cloves garlic, pressed or finely minced
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • fresh ground pepper to taste
  • 1 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp
    flour
  • 1/2 c
    beef broth
  • 1/2 c
    heavy cream
  • 1 can
    mixed vegetables, drained, you can use fresh or frozen, your choice
  • 2 c
    mashed potatoes
  • 1/8 c
    chopped chives (or finely sliced green onions with tops)
  • 2 c
    finely-shredded cheddar cheese or cheese blend, divided
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • sweet hungarian paprika

How To Make shepherds pie

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

    Place ground beef, mushrooms, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper in a large heavy skillet. Saute, breaking up ground beef, until the juices have almost evaporated.

    Stir in Worcestershire, then flour. Cook 1 minute, stirring often. Add beef broth, stirring to combine, then heavy cream. Simmer until gravy thickens. Pour into glass baking dish. Let cool slightly, then sprinkle green peas evenly on top of beef.

    In a mixing bowl, combine mashed potatoes, chives, 1 cup of the Cheddar cheese, and salt. Spread evenly on top of beef layer. Spread remaining cup of Cheddar cheese on top and sprinkle lightly with paprika.

    Bake about 30 minutes until cheese has melted and is slightly browned. Let rest 15 minutes before serving.
