Candied yams are a holiday side dish staple. This version uses fresh sweet potatoes and turns out delicious. It's made with simple ingredients and an easy dish to prepare. Once baked, the sweet potatoes are dripping in a buttery brown sugar sauce filled with cinnamon flavor. We could seriously have eaten spoonfuls of the sauce.

Ingredients For candied yams

  • 3 lb
    fresh sweet potatoes
  • 2 c
    water
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 6 Tbsp
    butter, melted
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    brown sugar, light
  • 1 tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    all spice (or 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg)

For us, 4 sweet potatoes equaled 3 lbs. There was more than enough sauce so you could probably use up to 6 potatoes.
  • Peeled sweet potatoes in a baking dish.

    Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Peel the sweet potato and place in a baking dish.
  • Water and vanilla extract poured into the baking dish.

    Pour water and vanilla into the baking dish.
  • Sugars, cinnamon, and allspice added to the baking dish.

    Now, add both sugars, cinnamon, and allspice.
  • Pats of butter added to the baking dish.

    Sprinkle butter over this.
  • Baking dish covered in foil and in the oven.

    Cover the baking pan tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for about 65 minutes.
  • Baked sweet potatoes removed from the oven.

    Remove sweet potatoes from the oven.
  • Sliced candied sweet potato on a plate.

    Slice or mash the potatoes.
