spicy apple baked beans
(5 ratings)
One of my three teenage sons loves all things apple. He's not a big bean fan though. The other two sons love baked beans. With this yummy twist on baked beans, I satisfied all three of them. However, my husband was the one who raved the most. It's a hit at our house and wherever I take it.
Blue Ribbon Recipe
Who knew that sausage and apples in baked beans would be so good?! The spicy/sweet combination in this recipe is divine. Chunks of apple are a tasty surprise and pair well with the sausage. There's only a hint of the nutmeg... it leaves your taste buds wondering what's that spice. This hearty side dish will be the perfect addition to your BBQ when you want to serve an untraditional baked beans recipe.

How To Make spicy apple baked beans
Test Kitchen Tips
Depending on how big you cut your apples you may have to bake this a bit longer for the apples to soften.
-
1Brown the sausage with the onions. Drain off grease.
-
2Place the applesauce, apple chunks, mustard, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper into a bowl. Grate in fresh nutmeg (it only takes a little nutmeg too much will overpower the other flavors). Stir together until mixed well.
-
3In a large bowl, mix the spicy apple mixture into the beans. Fold in sausage and onions.
-
4Bake in a glass or stoneware dish at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
