Blue Ribbon Recipe

A basic, but delicious, no-frills cornbread dressing just like every Southern mama makes. It has the perfect balance of fresh veggies and seasonings without being dry or mushy. Onions and celery add a pop of freshness and bake to tender. This is meant to serve a crowd so it will be perfect for the holidays.

Ingredients For holiday cornbread dressing

  • 2 c
    chopped celery
  • 2 lg
    onions, chopped
  • 5 c
    crumbled buttermilk cornbread (dry)
  • 5 c
    dry bread crumbs
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    poultry seasoning
  • 3 tsp
    sage or to taste
  • 1 tsp
    salt or to taste
  • 1 tsp
    pepper or to taste
  • 1 stick
    margarine
  • 1 stick
    butter
  • 4 lg
    eggs, beaten
  • 6 c
    turkey or chicken broth

Our dressing took longer to bake in the oven, about 55 minutes.
  • Oven preheating to 325 degrees/

    Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  • Baking dish coated in non-stick spray.

    Spray a large baking pan with Pam.
  • Crumbled cornbread, bread crumbs, celery, onions, and seasoning in a bowl.

    In a large mixing bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread, bread crumbs, chopped celery, chopped onions, and seasoning. Mix together.
  • Melted butter, melted margarine, and eggs added.

    Add melted butter, melted margarine, and beaten eggs. Mix well.
  • Adding broth to the dressing.

    Add chicken/turkey broth. The dressing should be pretty soupy to start so that it doesn’t get too dry while cooking. You may need to add more broth.
  • Dressing poured into the baking dish.

    Transfer to the prepared baking pan.
  • Baking dish covered in aluminum foil and baking in the oven.

    Bake, covered, for 35 minutes and uncovered for 10 minutes until browned or until well set and cooked through.
