not my mama's barbecue sauce

This barbecue sauce takes a while, because you want it to reduce and get thicker. I named it Not My Mama's because she really didn't like to cook things like barbecue sauce, preferred store bought. She'd only cook things for long periods on Sunday morning when she was at church and they could be in the oven for 3 hours. LOL.

Ingredients For not my mama's barbecue sauce

    onions, chopped
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter, melted
  • 3 c
    white vinegar
  • 2 c
    ketchup (or catsup, depends on where you are from)
  • 1 c
    chicken broth
  • 1 c
    beef broth
  • 3/4 c
    celery, chopped
  • 1/4 c
    fresh lemon juice
  • 3 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp
    sigar
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    chili powder
  • 1 tsp
    paprika
  • 1/2 tsp
    dry mustard powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground red pepper
  • 1/2 tsp
    pepper
  • 1/4 tsp
    hot sauce (more if desired)
  • 1/4 c
    bourbon, (optional)

How To Make not my mama's barbecue sauce

  • 1
    Saute the onion in a large saucepan over medium heat until tender.

    Add the vinegar and remaining ingredients, stirring well. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

    Use as a basting sauce for beef, pork, or chicken during grilling or cooking.
