Ingredients For caramelized onion sauce

1 Tbspbutter

1/2 Tbspolive oil

1 mdyellow onion, sliced thin

1/2 tspsugar
-
1/2 Tbspflour
-
1/2 - 3/4 cmilk or stock

1/4 tspItalian seasoning (or use favorite dried herbs)

1/8 tsppepper flakes or cayenne
-
1 Tbspshredded cheese, optional
How To Make caramelized onion sauce

1In a large frying pan, melt the butter with the oil over medium-high heat; add the sliced onions then sprinkle the sugar over the onions; cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20-25 minutes until the onions start to darken and become tender.

2Lower the heat; sprinkle the onions with flour and stir into the onions. Gradually add the milk or broth (I use water with bouillon) and stir into the onion mixture. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens.

3Stir in the herbs and seasonings. Sprinkle with cheese (if using) and stir until it melts.
