This is a very flavorful bq sauce that has approximately 250 mg of sodium for the entire 3 cups!!! Most store bought sauces have over 400mg of sodium per 1-2 Tablespoons. This recipe was upgrade on 9/24/11 (For lower sugar use apple cider vinegar instead of balsamic vinegar)

Ingredients For basic low sodium barbecue sauce
- BASIC SAUCE

115 oz. bottle of catsup (zero sodium)

18 oz can tomato sauce, no salt added (20 mg sodium)

1 Tbspbrown sugar

1/2 cmolasses....160 mg sodium
-
1 1/2 tspmesquite or hickory liquid smoke....10mg sodium

1 tspbold & spicy mustard....60 mg sodium

1 tspblack pepper
-
1/2 tspcumin
-
1 tsponion granules or powder
-
2 tspgarlic granules or powder
-
2 tspbalsamicvinegar (use apple cider vinegar for lower sugar)

1 tspsraricha hot sauce or chipotle chili powder
- BUTTERY HONEY SAUCE

2 cbasic sauce
-
1 stickunsalted butter
-
1/4 choney
- SOUTHWEST FLAVORS SAUCE

2 cbasic sauce
-
1 Tbspsouthwest spice rub-zero sodium

1 tspsmoked paprika
-
1 tspchipotle chili powder for added heat if desired
- SPICY MAPLE HONEY SAUCE

1 cbasic sauce

1/2 creal maple syrup

1/2 choney
-
1 tspchipotle chili powder (no sodium)

1/4-1/2 cfinely chopped pecans, opt
How To Make basic low sodium barbecue sauce

1Pour ketchup into med. sauce pan, add all ingredients. Simmer for about 30 min.

2For BUTTERY HONEY sauce: Melt a stick of butter in small sauce pan, once melted add 2 c. of this low sodium BBQ sauce and 1/4 c. of honey. Stir and heat for about 5 min.

3For SOUTHWEST sauce: Mix ingredients together and simmer for 5 min.

4For SPICY MAPLE HONEY sauce: Mix ingredients together, simmer for 5 min. Add pecans when sauce cools.
