Mom said she found this recipe on a bottle of A-1 Steak Sauce. Wherever she found it, this sauce was the "barbecue sauce of choice" at Shuman Cookouts from the early 1970's on. Mom always said you can go cheap on the ketchup & orange juice (meaning, to use generics) but you HAD to get the real A-1 sauce. One more thing, Mom was always concerned about cross-contamination, so after cooking the sauce, only part of it went into a 13 x 9 pan with the meat for the grill. The rest stayed warm in the pan until it was served as a dipping sauce. =^..^=

    a-1 steak sauce
  • 1 1/4 c
    ketchup
  • 6 oz
    can frozen orange juice concentrate

How To Make a-1 barbecue sauce aka shuman bbq sauce

    Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a slow simmer over medium heat, stirring often.

    Simmer for 5 minutes. Continue stirring.

    Pour part of the sauce over chicken or ribs (in a 13 x 9 pan), turning all pieces over several times, then grill. Baste with sauce left in the meat pan.

    Serve with warm sauce left in the saucepan, if desired.

    This sauce may be made ahead of time & refrigerated up to 2 weeks or frozen for up to 2 months.
