Ingredients For frances coward's apple butter

  • 6 lb
    apples
  • 1/2 c
    water
  • 3 c
    sugar
  • 1/4 c
    vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground allspice
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla flavor (optional)

How To Make frances coward's apple butter

    WASH & QUARTER APPLES. ADD WATER AND COOK UNTIL SOFT. STRAIN THROUGH FOOD MILL.

    COMBINE APPLE PULP, SUGAR AND VINEGAR. COOK UNTIL THICK; ABOUT 45 MINUTES.

    ADD SPICES AND VANILLA, IF DESIRED. POUR INTO HOT JARS.

    PROCESS IN HOT WATER BATH FOR 10 MINUTES. MAKES ABOUT 3 PINTS.
