1 can (28 ounces) peeled whole tomatoes, undrained
1 jalapeño pepper, roughly chopped ((remove seeds and ribs, if desired, to decrease spiciness))
½ small onion, roughly chopped
2 garlic cloves, roughly chopped ((see note))
1 cup loosely packed cilantro leaves and stems
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon sugar or agave nectar
ground black pepper, to taste
