4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into half-inch pieces
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped,pitted dates (see note in step 1)
1 cup boiling water
1 large egg
2/3 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
