My children brought me back this wonderful cookbook from Alcatraz. This cookbook was compiled by the wives and mothers of the guards who all lived on Alcatraz Island and maintained the comforts of home there. Of the island's 22 acres, 7 acres were allocated for the prison and 5 acres for the families. One former resident said it was the "safest place in California, because they knew where all the bad guys were." Of the Rock's civilian population of about 260 - 60 - 90 of them were children. Shopping, school or any other routine activity all required a trip to San Francisco on the ferry, the same way the prisioners were delivered to the island. This "recipe" came from Alcatraz Women's Club Cook Book by Mrs. Robert Murphy.
