Do I have too many spices? Some might say yes. Recently we bought a spice cabinet to store all my spices and herbs in. It came from Ikea, and was intended to be office furniture - a tall, 9-drawer cabinet with drawers the size of office documents. I filled the first 5 drawers with herbs and spices, and it holds everything where I can find it easily, except my huge bulk containers of things like chili powder which I keep in the freezer.

How To Make spice of life

  • 1
1st drawer ~ Blends holds blends such as Cajun and Greek seasoning, Italian herb blend, seasoning salts and Mrs. Dash.
  • 2
2nd drawer ~ Sweet spices holds cinnamon, cloves, pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg, and others that you would put into baked goods.
  • 3
3rd drawer ~ Savory spices holds mostly single spices such as mustard, cilantro, parsley, basil, and of course overflow from the spice blends, such as Southwest seasoning and Krazy Pepper.
  • 4
4th drawer ~ Bulk herbs This is where bulk containers of coriander, rosemary, curry powder, cumin, thyme, and others go. I grow a lot of herbs, so some of my home-dried herbs are here, too.
  • 5
5th drawer ~ Overflow Of course not everything fits, so along with my Goya Seasoning packets, I have little tupperware containers of things like white pepper, Chinese 5-spice, cayenne, celery seed, dill, and mint.

We had so much fun setting this up. The other 4 drawers hold coffee and tea, office supplies, broth seasoning powders, even Tums, gum, cough drops, and Airborne - the things you really want to be able to find in a jiffy!

And it all closes up sleek and clean looking. It sure beats the countertops being cluttered with spice racks. I'm on a quest to have empty countertops, and this was a step in that direction. Happy cooking, everyone!
