Ingredients For sloppy joe grilled cheese sandwich

  • PLAN/PURCHASE
  • 1/2 lb
    lean ground beef
  • 1/2 lb
    breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 md
    yellow onion, diced
  • 2 clove
    garlic, minced
  • 1/4 md
    green bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 1 Tbsp
    tomato paste
  • 1 tsp
    chili powder
  • 1 tsp
    ground cumin
  • 1 tsp
    ground mustard powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt, kosher variety, or to taste
  • 8 oz
    tomato sauce
  • 1/4 c
    filtered water
  • 2 Tbsp
    apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp
    dark brown sugar
  • THE SANDWICH
  • 6 oz
    sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 6 slice
    good firm bread
  • 4 Tbsp
    mayonnaise

How To Make sloppy joe grilled cheese sandwich

    Gather your ingredients.

    Add the ground beef, sausage, and onion to a skillet over medium heat.
  • 5
    Cook until the onions begin to soften, and the protein has almost cooked, about 5 to 7 minutes.

    Chef’s Note: Use a wooden spoon to break the meat into small pieces.

    Drain off any excess grease.
  • 8
    Add the green bell pepper, and garlic.
  • 9
    Cook until the garlic is fragrant, about 1 minute.

    Add the tomato paste, and stir to incorporate.

    Add the remainder of the ingredients

    Stir to thoroughly combine.

    Allow the mixture to lightly simmer until the sauce begins to reduce and thicken, about 20 to 30 minutes.

    Remove from heat, and allow it to cool.

    Gather your ingredients.

    Brush the mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice.

    Add some of the cheese to one of the slices (the side without the mayo).

    Add some of the sloppy Joe mix on top.

    Finish with the top slice of bread (mayo side out).

    Place the sandwich into a skillet over medium heat.

    Flip after about 90 seconds.

    Continue to flip every 90 seconds until both sides are nice and brown, about 5 or 6 flips.
