I grew up eating sandwiches akin to this one, and although versions of this recipe are found everywhere, the term “Tuna Toasties” is a very British thing. I have seen them made with chicken, haddock; even beef…One slice of bread, or two…. Cooked up in a skillet, or baked in the oven. I have reconstructed this recipe from memories of the past, and added a few additions from the present. So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

Ingredients For sandwich essentials: yummy croissant tuna toasties

  • PLAN/PURCHASE
  • 1 md
    freshly-baked croissants, or bread, of your choice
  • 1 Tbsp
    sweet butter, unsalted, melted
  • 2 slice
    bacon, your choice
  • 1 - 3 Tbsp
    yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 stalk
    celery, finely chopped
  • 5 oz
    albacore tuna, water packed (1 can)
  • 1 Tbsp
    pickle relish, dill variety
  • 1 dash
    hot sauce, i prefer frank’s, or to taste
  • salt, kosher variety, to taste
  • white pepper, freshly ground, to taste
  • 1 Tbsp
    mayonnaise, plain variety
  • 1 Tbsp
    brown mustard, i prefer grey poupon
  • 2 oz
    sharp white cheddar cheese, freshly grated

How To Make sandwich essentials: yummy croissant tuna toasties

    Chef’s Note: These toasties are traditionally served warm; however, they are great wrapped up, and served cold for lunch.

    Gather your Ingredients (mise en place).
  • 4
    Place a rack in the upper position, and preheat the oven to 350f (175c).
  • 5
    Cut the croissants in half (lengthwise), and brush 1 tablespoon of the butter on the cut sides.

    Place a skillet over medium heat, and toast the croissants until the cut sides are a golden brown, about 2 – 3 minutes.

    Remove the croissants, from the pan, and add the bacon.
  • 8
    Slow cook until crisp, then drain on paper towels, and reserve.

    Add the onions to the pan with the bacon grease.

    Stir until softened, about 2 – 3 minutes.

    Add the celery, and cook for an additional 60 seconds.

    Add the tuna to the skillet.

    Break up, and combine with the onions and butter, about 60 seconds.

    Remove the skillet from the heat.

    Whisk together the relish, hot sauce, salt, white pepper, mayonnaise, and brown mustard.

    Add to the pan, and combine with the onions, and tuna.

    Divide between the two croissants, and add the grated cheese on top.

    Place in the preheated oven, and bake until the cheese is nice and melty, about 2 – 3 minutes.

    Add the reserved bacon, and serve while still nice and warm, with some chips or fries. Enjoy.
