sandwich essentials: yummy croissant tuna toasties
I grew up eating sandwiches akin to this one, and although versions of this recipe are found everywhere, the term “Tuna Toasties” is a very British thing. I have seen them made with chicken, haddock; even beef…One slice of bread, or two…. Cooked up in a skillet, or baked in the oven. I have reconstructed this recipe from memories of the past, and added a few additions from the present. So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

Ingredients For sandwich essentials: yummy croissant tuna toasties
- PLAN/PURCHASE

1 mdfreshly-baked croissants, or bread, of your choice

1 Tbspsweet butter, unsalted, melted
-
2 slicebacon, your choice
-
1 - 3 Tbspyellow onion, finely chopped
-
1/2 stalkcelery, finely chopped
-
5 ozalbacore tuna, water packed (1 can)
-
1 Tbsppickle relish, dill variety
-
1 dashhot sauce, i prefer frank’s, or to taste
-
salt, kosher variety, to taste
-
white pepper, freshly ground, to taste
-
1 Tbspmayonnaise, plain variety
-
1 Tbspbrown mustard, i prefer grey poupon
-
2 ozsharp white cheddar cheese, freshly grated
How To Make sandwich essentials: yummy croissant tuna toasties

1PREP/PREPARE

2Chef’s Note: These toasties are traditionally served warm; however, they are great wrapped up, and served cold for lunch.

3Gather your Ingredients (mise en place).

4Place a rack in the upper position, and preheat the oven to 350f (175c).
-
5Cut the croissants in half (lengthwise), and brush 1 tablespoon of the butter on the cut sides.

6Place a skillet over medium heat, and toast the croissants until the cut sides are a golden brown, about 2 – 3 minutes.

7Remove the croissants, from the pan, and add the bacon.
-
8Slow cook until crisp, then drain on paper towels, and reserve.

9Add the onions to the pan with the bacon grease.
-
10Stir until softened, about 2 – 3 minutes.
-
11Add the celery, and cook for an additional 60 seconds.
-
12Add the tuna to the skillet.
-
13Break up, and combine with the onions and butter, about 60 seconds.

14Remove the skillet from the heat.

15Whisk together the relish, hot sauce, salt, white pepper, mayonnaise, and brown mustard.

16Add to the pan, and combine with the onions, and tuna.

17Divide between the two croissants, and add the grated cheese on top.

18Place in the preheated oven, and bake until the cheese is nice and melty, about 2 – 3 minutes.

19PLATE/PRESENT

20Add the reserved bacon, and serve while still nice and warm, with some chips or fries. Enjoy.
