sandwich essentials: hummus burger on toast

This is a fun sandwich that I came up with on a whim yesterday. The condiments are not mayo, not mustard, not ketchup… just hummus. I served it open-faced on a piece of toasted cracked wheat bread, slathered with hummus, some lettuce, and sliced tomatoes. Not sure what I expected, but it was really yummy. Everyone gave it two thumbs up. So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

Ingredients For sandwich essentials: hummus burger on toast

  • PLAN/PURCHASE
  • 1/4 lb
    ground chuck
  • 3 - 4 md
    pitted black olives, chopped
  • 1 - 2 Tbsp
    pickle relish, dill or sweet, your choice
  • 2 - 3 Tbsp
    freshly made hummus
  • 1 sm
    tomato, sliced
  • 1 slice
    bread, toasted
  • some fresh lettuce
  • salt, kosher variety, to taste
  • black pepper, freshly ground, to taste

    You will need a small skillet to make this recipe.

    Gather your ingredients (mise en place).

    Add the olives and relish to the ground beef and gently mix to combine. Then place in a cold skillet, put it on the stovetop, set the heat to medium, and sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper.

    After the bottom begins to brown (3 – 4 minutes), flip, sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper, and cook an additional 3 – 4 minutes. Note: I like mine a bit on the rare side, so I cut those times in half.

    Toast the bread, and slather with 2 tablespoons of the hummus. Then toss the tomatoes with the remaining hummus. Note: You might need a bit more hummus, but that is okay because hummus is a good thing. Place the lettuce on the toast, add the burger, and top with the hummus-tossed tomatoes. Enjoy.
