I love grilled reubens! However, I don't usually have easy access to corned beef. So what's a girl to do when that "gotta have it" craving hits? Why, use ham, of course! This sandwich is so easy and so good! I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do!

Ingredients For grilled reuben, southern style

  • 2 slice
    pumpernickel bread
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    butter, softened
  • 2 tsp
    thousand island dressing
  • 2 slice
    swiss cheese, sandwich-size
  • 2 or 3 slice
    hickory smoked ham lunchmeat
  • 1/4 c
    sauerkraut, very well drained

How To Make grilled reuben, southern style

    Gather and prep all ingredients.

    Preheat indoor grill, griddle or fry pan. (Medium/medium high heat.)

    Spread half of the butter on 1 side of 1 slice of the pumpernickel; set aside.

    Spread dressing on the second slice of bread.
  • 5
    Place 1 slice of cheese on top, tearing and arranging cheese to cover bread well.

    Arrange ham slices to cover cheese well.

    Scatter sauerkraut over ham (may use more or less sauerkraut, as desired.)

    Tear and arrange remaining cheese slice over sauerkraut.

    Place buttered slice of bread on top, buttered side up.

    Place sandwich, buttered side down, on grill or pan; spread remaining butter on bread.

    Cook for 1 1/2 to 3 minutes (depending on pan or grill and heat. Be careful not to burn!)

    Turn sandwich over, placing the sandwich in the opposite direction.

    Cook for another minute or 2, until cheese is melted.

    Garnish as desired; serve immediately. Great with pickles and chips on the side.
