This recipe is probably 40 years old. I can tell because it was typed on a very old recipe card. This is much easier than making regular manicotti or lasagne and just as flavorful. We love it!

Ingredients For inside-out manicotti

1 Tbspvegetable oil

1/3 cchopped onion

1/2 tspminced garlic

1 can(28 oz.) crushed tomatoes

1 can(6 oz.) tomato paste

1 tspbasil
-
1 tspsalt
-
15 ozcottage cheese
-
8 ozgrated mozzarella cheese

1 lgegg
-
1/8 tsppepper
-
1/8 tspground cloves or nutmeg

8 ozcooked mostaccioli or ziti
How To Make inside-out manicotti

1Using a cutting board, chop onion into fine pieces.

2Chop and mince 1 clove of garlic.

3In a large saucepan heat oil over moderately high heat. Add onion and garlic and cook 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until onion is translucent.

4Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, basil and 1/2 tsp. of the salt. Bring to a boil; then reduce heat to moderately low, cover pan and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

5In a medium sized bowl mix cheeses, egg, pepper, cloves and the remaining 1/2 tsp. salt.

6Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cover the bottom of a 2 1/2 qt. oblong baking dish with about 1 cup of the tomato sauce; sprinkle with half the mostaccioli. Cover with half the cheese mixture, 2 more cups tomato sauce and remaining mostaccioli. Top with remaining cheese and sauce.

7Bake at 350 for 20 to 25 minutes, until sauce is bubbling and cheese is melted.
