baked cavatappi and havarti cheese with mushrooms

This is another cavatappi pasta recipe I created. It's in the style of macaroni and cheese, filled with cremini mushrooms sauteed in honey mustard and a havarti cheese sauce.

Ingredients For baked cavatappi and havarti cheese with mushrooms

  • 1 c
    cubed processed American cheese
  • 4 Tbsp
    Italian seasoning, divided
  • 16 oz
    dry cavatappi pasta
  • 2 Tbsp
    avocado oil
  • 6
    cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 Tbsp
    steak seasoning
  • 1 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 1
    packet dry onion soup mix
  • 2 Tbsp
    honey mustard
  • 2 Tbsp
    margarine
  • 1 c
    heavy cream
  • 8 oz
    cream cheese, softened
  • 3/4 c
    half and half
  • 8 oz
    havarti cheese, shredded
  • 3 Tbsp
    panko bread crumbs

How To Make baked cavatappi and havarti cheese with mushrooms

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

    Coat a 9x13- inch baking dish with cooking spray. Add the cubed American cheese and 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning; mix well with a fork.

    Cook the cavatappi pasta according to package directions; drain. Season with 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning; toss well.

    Heat the avocado oil in a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced cremini mushrooms and saute for 6 minutes until the mushrooms are tender.

    Stir in the steak seasoning, garlic powder, dry onion soup mix and honey mustard. Remove from heat and set aside.

    Melt the margarine and season with remaining Italian seasoning in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Combine the heavy cream, cream cheese, half and half and 1 cup shredded havarti cheese. Stir together for 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and the sauce is thickened.

    Add cooked cavatappi pasta and sauteed mushroom mixture and stir well until combined. Remove from heat.

    Spoon into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Sprinkle with remaining shredded havarti cheese and panko bread crumbs.

    Bake for 35 minutes or until golden brown.
