Mom started making this dish when we moved to Puerto Rico in the early 70's. It became a family favorite and takes me back to that place and time with each bite.

Ingredients For puerto rican rice and beans

2ham steaks, cubed
-
1 lgonion
-
1 lgbell pepper
-
4 clovegarlic
-
1 cantomato sauce
-
2-3 canwater (tomato sauce can)

1 Tbsporegano, dried
-
1 Tbspcilantro, dried (i use a small bunch of fresh, minced)

1/2 tspblack pepper
-
2 canfavorite pinto beans (or can use homemade)
How To Make puerto rican rice and beans

1Brown diced ham in oil
-
2Add onion, garlic and bell pepper and saute with ham

3Add tomato sauce & water along with oregano, cilantro and pepper
-
4Simmer for 30 min., covered

5Add 2 cans of pinto beans, cover and simmer 1 hour (you may need to add a little water after adding beans, use your judgement)

6Remove from heat and serve over rice
