I have seen many versions of this recipe. I've tailored the ingredients and made the instructions easier for my adult kids to make at home. I really enjoy making it and the family enjoys eating it.

Ingredients For hearty cheesburger casserole

  • 6 slice
    bread
  • ***
    butter for buttered bread
  • 2 c
    shredded cheese
  • 2 box
    macaroni and cheese-prepared (you'll need an extra 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup butter to prepare according to box directions.)
  • 1 lb
    ground beef, or turkey
  • 2 Tbsp
    water
  • 3 Tbsp
    steak sauce
  • 1 tsp
    mustard
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp
    pepper
  • 1 c
    dill pickles, chopped
  • 1/2
    onion, chopped finely
  • ***
    ketchup bottle for squeezing

How To Make hearty cheesburger casserole

    Pre-Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Butter your 6 slices of bread and put them butter-side down in an un-greased 9x13 baking dish. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheese over the bread.

    Prepare the 2 boxes of mac and cheese per package directions.

    Combine ground beef with water, steak sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Brown the meat. Drain if greasy.

    Layer the prepared mac and cheese over the bread and cheese in the dish. Layer the meat over the mac and cheese. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over the meat. Now layer the pickles, then onions on top. Squeeze ketchup from the bottle back and forth over your layered casserole.

    Bake for 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted. Be careful not to let it burn.
