In a medium bowl, mix ground beef, bread or cracker crumbs, egg and soup mix thoroughly.

Make 6 - 8 patties. I shape them like footballs. In a skillet, fry the patties until they are browned on both sides. If using onion, slightly brown them with the burgers,

While the hamburgers are cooking; in a bowl mix together the dry gravy mix, 1/2 cup water and sour cream. If using mushrooms, mix them in as well.
  • 5
Bring 1 1/2 cups cold water to a boil in a saucepan. Stir in the gravy/ sour cream mixture; bring to a slow boil until thickened ( about 1 minute)

When burgers are browned on both sides. Place then in the baking dish. ( along with onions if using, spreading them out evenly). Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the burgers. Cover with foil. Bake for about 40 minutes; turning burgers halfway through baking. Return to oven and continue baking until meat is thoroughly cooked, and gravy bubbling.
