This recipe has been in my family for as long as I can remember. I'm not really sure where it came from exactly but we think that my grandmother, seeing the way her kids liked hot dogs and onions on the streets of NY, came up with her own version at home. My uncle was famous for making this dish and his neighbors always requested it. It always reminds me of him when I make this dish... Miss him!

Blue Ribbon Recipe

This is a great, hearty meal that's easy to prepare. Kids love hot dogs and this is a different way to serve them. It's a perfect "in a pinch" dinner idea since ingredients may be in your pantry and fridge already. We think adults will gobble this up too.

Ingredients For uncle matty's hot dogs with onions

  • 2 pkg
    hot dogs (of your choice)
  • 5 lg
    onions
  • 4
    garlic cloves
  • 3 can
    tomato sauce (8 oz each)
  • 1 1/2 can
    water
  • 1 Tbsp
    dried parsley
  • red pepper flakes (to your taste)
  • enough oil in your pan to saute onions

How To Make uncle matty's hot dogs with onions

  • Browning onions in a skillet.
    1
Cut up onions. I cut them in 1/2 and then slice them into 1/2 rounds. I put about 2 turns of a pan's worth of extra virgin olive oil and saute the onions until they start to get golden.
  • Sliced hot dogs on a cutting board.
    2
While the onions are cooking I mince the garlic. Take the hot dogs and cut them into coins. Not too thin.
  • Seasonings, tomato sauce, and water added to the onions.
    3
When the onions start to get golden, I add the red pepper flakes, parsley, and garlic to the pan. When you start to smell the garlic, add the tomato sauce and water (though sometimes I forget and just add the hot dogs before the sauce but it's better to let the sauce cook a bit first before you add the hot dogs.)
  • Hot dogs added to the skillet.
    4
When the sauce thickens add the hot dogs and let it cook for about 20 - 30 minutes so the hot dogs cook through.
  • Uncle Matty's Hot Dogs With Onions in a hot dog roll.

We make sandwiches on Italian bread but you could easily serve this over rice or a short-cut pasta.
