Serve homemade meatballs and sauce over your favorite pasta with a crisp salad and garlic bread for a comforting meal. The savory meatballs pair well with the hint of sweetness from the tomato sauce. Cooking them in the Crock Pot for hours after baking helps them soak up the delicious tomato flavor. Nothing is boring about these Italian meatballs. They'd be delicious on a sandwich, too.

Ingredients For homemade meatballs and sauce

  • MEATBALLS
  • 1 lb
    lean ground beef
  • 1 lb
    ground pork
  • 4 slice
    bread
  • 2 Tbsp
    garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp
    parsley
  • 2 Tbsp
    onion powder
  • 1 c
    Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    pepper
  • 1 lg
    egg
  • 1/2 c
    milk
  • 1/4 c
    chicken stock (use in pan with meatballs while baking)
  • SAUCE
  • 1 lb
    crushed tomatoes
  • 15 oz
    diced tomatoes
  • 15 oz
    tomato sauce
  • 2 clove
    garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp
    fresh chopped basil
  • 2 Tbsp
    olive oil
  • salt and pepper (to taste)

How To Make homemade meatballs and sauce

  • Cubed bread in a bowl.

    Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cube the bread removing the crust and soak in the milk in a large bowl.
  • Add pork, beef, egg, onion powder, garlic powder, parsley, cheese, salt, and pepper.

  • Meatballs formed and on a baking sheet.

    Roll meatballs and put them in a baking dish.
  • Tray covered in foil and baking in the oven.

    Add 1/4 cup of chicken stock and cover with foil. Bake for 35 minutes or until meatballs are fully cooked.
  • Sauce ingredients in a bowl.

    While the meatballs are baking, make the sauce. Add all ingredients to a large pot (or Crock Pot) except the basil. If you are not using a Crock Pot, then simmer the minced garlic cloves for about 2 minutes on low then add to the sauce.
  • Baked meatballs added to the slow cooker.

    Add meatballs to the sauce when they are finished. (In a Crock Pot set to low heat for 4-6 hours). Add basil to sauce and meatballs 5-10 minutes before serving.
