This is one of my families favorite. We had a birthday this week and this was the request from the birthday girl. I let them choose what to fix that nite for their special day.

This isn't your typical roux based gumbo. The okra is what thickens this gumbo - very traditional for the older generation of Louisiana. The real flavor from cooking down all the vegetables is fabulous. The tomato pulls it all together. By adding them at the end, the shrimp are cooked to perfection. Pure southern Louisiana comfort food!

Ingredients For shrimp and okra gumbo

2 lbshrimp
-
2 lbokra (sliced)
-
2 mdonion chopped
-
1/4 cchopped bell pepper
-
1/4 cchopped celery
-
4 Tbspoil
-
1 cansmall tomato sauce
-
2 cwater, warm
-
salt and pepper to taste
How To Make shrimp and okra gumbo

1Mix okra, onions, bell pepper and celery in oil and smother for 30 minutes.

2Add tomato sauce and water.

3Add shrimp and season to taste.

4Cook about 15 minutes. Can also add water, as needed, if consistency is too thick.

5Serve with cooked rice.
