When I was about 4 or 5 year old, my late Mamaw fixed this recipe as a main dish to her "Southern Style Hush Puppies" recipe, which I have posted on here. Note: Since I am from Mississippi, my family and I eat this a lot.

Stove Top
Ingredients For fried southern catfish

1 1/2 call purpose flour

1 Tbspsalt

3 tspblack pepper

2 tspground red pepper

1 cbuttermilk

1 lgegg, beaten

2 1/2 cself rising cornmeal

1 Tbspgarlic powder
-
1 Tbspdried thyme
-
catfish filets
-
peanut oil for frying
How To Make fried southern catfish

1Combine first 4 ingredients in a shallow pan.

2Stir together buttermilk and egg in a bowl.

3Combine the cornmeal, garlic powder and thyme in a large Ziploc bag.

4Dredge catfish in flour mixture.

5The dip in buttermilk mixture.

6Next shake catfish in sealed Ziploc bag.

7Fry in a deep fryer or heavy duty cast iron skillet in hot peanut oil.

8Serve with hush puppies.
