I got this recipe from my mother. This recipe was passed down in my dad's family from his step-grandmother. It's always a hit in my house! If more broth is needed, add canned broth or water and a chicken bouillon cube.

  • 1 md
    whole chicken
  • 1 3/4 tsp
    salt, divided
  • 1/4 tsp
    black pepper
  • 1 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 c
    water
  • 1 Tbsp
    shortening
  • 2 - 3 c
    all-purpose flour

How To Make homemade chicken and dumplins

  • 1
Boil chicken with water, 3/4 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp black pepper until done; about 1 hour.

Then remove from broth and debone.
  • 3
In a mixing bowl add 1 tsp salt, baking powder, shortening, and 1 cup water.
  • 4
Add enough flour (about 2 cups) to make a dough. If you want, you can add a little yellow food coloring to the mixture before adding flour.
  • 5
Roll out dough VERY THIN on a floured surface. Parchment paper or a silicone mat works great for rolling out dough.
  • 6
Cut into strips; about 1" wide and 3" long.
  • 7
Add the strips of dough (dumplings) to the boiling chicken broth.
  • 8
Boil about 20 minutes. Stirring occasionally.
  • 9
    Add chicken.
  • 10
Season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Can also add 1 chicken bouillon cube or 1/4 tsp of poultry seasoning if desired.
  • 11
    Stir and serve.
