This recipe is basically a thickened homemade french onion soup with seasoned chicken and smoked cheese. This recipe is sure to melt in your mouth!

Ingredients For french onion chicken thighs with provolone

  • FRENCH ONION GRAVY
  • 2 md
    onions, yellow
  • 2 Tbsp
    balsamic vinegar
  • 2 c
    beef broth
  • 8 tsp
    minced onion, dried
  • 2 tsp
    onion powder
  • 2 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp
    pepper
  • 2 Tbsp
    corn starch & cold water
  • CHICKEN
  • 2 Tbsp
    olive oil, extra virgin
  • 4
    chicken thighs, skin on and bone in
  • To taste
    garlic powder
  • To taste
    onion powder
  • To taste
    paprika
  • To taste
    pepper
  • To taste
    parsley flakes
  • 4 slice
    provolone cheese

How To Make french onion chicken thighs with provolone

    Preheat oven to 400.
  • 2
    Combine beef broth, dry onion flakes, onion powder, Garlic powder, pepper, set aside.

    Season chicken using the pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and parsley.

    Heat olive oil in a cast iron skillet on medium-high heat, sear chicken for 3 minutes on each side. Place on a separate dish and set aside.

    Toss in onion slices, cook til tender, (You may need to add 1 more tablespoon of olive oil, just use your judgement) stir in balsamic vinegar for 1 minute and add broth mixture, simmer for 3-5 minutes.

    Add chicken back to the pan.Transfer pan to oven for 30 minutes.

    Remove Skillet from oven return to stovetop on medium heat, add cornstarch and water mixture, heat till mixture thickens to a gravy. (I removed the chicken from the skillet to get a better mix and added chicken back to skillet)

    Add a slice of provolone cheese to each thigh, cover on low heat till cheese is melted.
