You can make the sauce ahead when it's convenient! Don't look for this in a Chinese restaurant if you order chicken & broccoli. I just made this one up!

Ingredients For chicken and broccoli

  • FOR THE SAUCE
  • 2 tsp
    sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp
    fresh ginger root, minced
  • 1 Tbsp
    garlic, minced
  • 1/2 c
    soy sauce
  • 1/4 c
    hoisin sauce
  • 1/2 c
    water
  • 1 Tbsp
    corn starch
  • 2/3 c
    brown sugar
  • FOR THE CHICKEN
  • 1 lb
    boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut up
  • 1 lg
    egg
  • 1 c
    flour
  • 1 c
    milk
  • canola oil for frying
  • FOR THE STIR-FRY
  • 1 bunch
    fresh broccoli cut into flowerets
  • 2 lg
    green onions, sliced
  • 4 c
    cooked white rice
  • toasted sesame seeds for garnishing

How To Make chicken and broccoli

    Make the sauce by heating 2 tsp of sesame oil in medium saucepan over med/low heat. Add ginger and garlic to the pan and quickly add the soy sauce and water before the garlic scorches, Stir in the Hoisin sauce. Dissolve the cornstarch and brown sugar in the sauce before it gets hot, then raise the heat to about medium and boil the sauce for 2-3 minutes or until the sauce thickens. Remove it from heat; set aside.

    Slice the chicken against the grain into 1/4 inch thick bite-size slices.

    Beat egg with milk until will mixed. Dip the chicken pieces into the milk and roll flour.

    Fry in an inch or so of hot oil until browned. Set in 170 degree oven on a rack to keep warm and stay crisp while you prepare the rest.

    Add broccoli and stir-fry 1 minute until crisp tender.

    Add the sauce. Toss until well coated and heated through.

    Serve over white rice and garnish with a tsp. or so of sliced green onions.
