We like to use this basic recipe when we have a crowd over for a barbecue. It will make 8 child-sized and 4 adult-sized burgers.

Thanks to barbecue sauce mixed into the ground beef, the juicy burgers have a bit of sweetness to them. On top of a toasted bun with your favorite fix-ins (we opted for bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and pickles), for a delicious grilled hamburger.

Ingredients For grilled cheddar burgers

  • 3 1/2 lb
    ground beef
  • 1/2 c
    purchased barbecue sauce
  • 1 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    black pepper
  • 12
    hamburger buns, lightly toasted
  • 1 c
    cheddar cheese, shredded

How To Make grilled cheddar burgers

  • Ground beef, barbecue sauce, and seasonings in a bowl.

    Mix together ground beef, barbecue sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Forming smaller hamburger patties with ground beef.

    Shape half of meat mixture into eight 1/2-inch-thick patties.
  • Forming larger hamburger patties with ground beef.

    Shape the remaining meat mixture into four 1-inch-thick patties. (Can be made 8 hours ahead). Cover and chill.
  • Grilling the hamburgers.

    Prepare grill (medium-high heat). Grill patties to desired doneness, about 4 minutes per side for medium-rare for 1/2-inch thick patties and about 6 minutes per side for medium-rare 1-inch thick patties.
  • Topping the grilled burgers with cheddar cheese.

    Top with cheese the last minute of cooking.
  • Assembling the cheddar burger.

    Place burgers on the bottom halves of buns and top with lettuce and tomatoes and anything else that you like.
  • Toasted bun on top of the cheddar burger.

    Cover with top bun.
