These seem to always be popular with the adults. I like to make them for a crowd and place the uncooked patties in the refrigerator on a jelly roll pan lined with waxed paper. They can be refrigerated for 4-5 hours.

1 1/2 lbground beef

1 smonion, finely chopped

1/4 csweet pickle relish

1 tspsalt

1/4 tsppepper

2 Tbspbarbecue sauce

6hamburger buns, split

6 sliceprovolone cheese
- CARAMELIZED ONIONS:

2 Tbspbutter
-
2 lgonions, thinly sliced and separated into rings

2 Tbspbrown sugar, packed
How To Make caramelized onion burgers

1Heat coals or gas grill.

2Make caramelized onions. Melt butter in 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Cook onions in butter 8 to 9 minutes, stirring frequently, until clear. (I usually cook them longer....maybe 15 to 20 minutes). Stir in brown sugar. Cook about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until onions are caramel colored and liquid is absorbed. Set aside until ready to serve.

3Mix beef, onion, relish, salt and pepper.

4Shape mixture into 6 patties, about 1/4 inch thick; brush with barbecue sauce.

5Grill patties uncovered about 4 inches from medium heat 10 to 15 minutes, turning once, until no longer pink in center and juice is clear.

6Serve on buns with cheese, onions and additional barbecue sauce.
