caramelized onion burgers

These seem to always be popular with the adults. I like to make them for a crowd and place the uncooked patties in the refrigerator on a jelly roll pan lined with waxed paper. They can be refrigerated for 4-5 hours.

Ingredients For caramelized onion burgers

  • 1 1/2 lb
    ground beef
  • 1 sm
    onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 c
    sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1/4 tsp
    pepper
  • 2 Tbsp
    barbecue sauce
  • 6
    hamburger buns, split
  • 6 slice
    provolone cheese
  • CARAMELIZED ONIONS:
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter
  • 2 lg
    onions, thinly sliced and separated into rings
  • 2 Tbsp
    brown sugar, packed

How To Make caramelized onion burgers

    Heat coals or gas grill.
  • 2
    Make caramelized onions. Melt butter in 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Cook onions in butter 8 to 9 minutes, stirring frequently, until clear. (I usually cook them longer....maybe 15 to 20 minutes). Stir in brown sugar. Cook about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until onions are caramel colored and liquid is absorbed. Set aside until ready to serve.

    Mix beef, onion, relish, salt and pepper.

    Shape mixture into 6 patties, about 1/4 inch thick; brush with barbecue sauce.

    Grill patties uncovered about 4 inches from medium heat 10 to 15 minutes, turning once, until no longer pink in center and juice is clear.

    Serve on buns with cheese, onions and additional barbecue sauce.
