sweet and sour meatballs

this recipe was first made for my open house...and family and friends have requested it ever since. In my opinion,boiling the meatballs removes a lot of the grease,and is a great alternative to baking or frying them. And the gingersnaps give the sauce a real kick.

Ingredients For sweet and sour meatballs

  • MEATBALLS
  • 5 lb
    ground chuck
  • 1 c
    bread crumbs
  • 1 pkg
    dry onion soup mix
  • 3/4 c
    chopped onion,dehydrated
  • 3/4 c
    water
  • SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE
  • 1 can
    tomato paste,small
  • 2 can
    tomatoes,chopped
  • 1 lb
    brown sugar
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 c
    lemon juice
  • 1/2 c
    vinegar
  • 10
    gingersnaps,crushed fine

How To Make sweet and sour meatballs

    FOR MEATBALLS: Heat large pot of water to boiling. Meanwhile combine all meatball ingredients. Roll into 1" balls. Drop balls about 20 at a time into boiling water. When they float to the top,boil for 1 minute.Remove and drain. replace back in pot or put in slow cooker.

    FOR SAUCE: Mix together all ingredients except gingersnaps. cook half hour add gingersnaps. combine thoroughly. Add to meatballs either in slowcooker on low setting or in pot on stovetop on very low . stir occasionally. cook about 3 hours
