Another great recipe from BUNKO this past week. It is typically made on Italian bread but since my husband doesn't care for that kind of bread, I made him some on regular hamburger buns. This is so good and makes several. It was a great meal for 12 BUNKO women!

Everyone in the Test Kitchen loved this Italian twist on the classic sloppy joe. The amount of Italian seasoning in the meat mixture is just right and pairs perfectly with the garlic butter and cheese on the bread. This is a cinch to make and will be a crowd pleaser. A great dinner recipe for a busy night or for your next tailgate.

Ingredients For stromboli joes

  • 2 lb
    ground beef
  • 1/4 c
    finely chopped onion
  • 1 c
    catsup
  • 1 c
    tomato sauce
  • 1/4 c
    grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tsp
    garlic powder, divided
  • 1 tsp
    dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp
    fennel seed
  • 1/2 tsp
    Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 c
    butter, softened
  • 2 lb
    loaves Italian bread, halved lengthwise (1 each)
  • 2 c
    shredded mozzarella cheese (8 oz.)

How To Make stromboli joes

  • Browning beef in Dutch oven.

    In a Dutch oven, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain.
  • Cheese, catsup, and spices mixed into browned beef.

    Stir in the catsup, tomato sauce, Parmesan cheese, 1/2 tsp. garlic powder, oregano, fennel seed and Italian seasoning.
  • Ground beef simmering on the stove.

    Bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Simmer uncovered for 15 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally.
  • Butter and garlic powder in a bowl.

    In a small bowl, combine butter and remaining garlic powder.
  • Garlic butter spread over bread.

    Spread over top halves of bread.
  • Cheese spread over garlic bread.

    Sprinkle 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese over each bottom bread half.
  • Meat mixture spooned over cheesy garlic bread.

    Spoon meat mixture over top.
  • Cheese sprinkled on top of meat mixture on garlic bread.

    Sprinkle with remaining mozzarella cheese.
  • Other half of bread added to top.

    Replace bread tops.
  • Bread covered in aluminum foil in oven.

    Wrap each sandwich loaf in foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes or until cheese is melted.
  • Slices of Stromboli joes on a plate.

    Slice into eight pieces from each loaf. Yield: 2 sandwich loaves (8 servings each).
