This dish is different than most. That's why I like it. I'm always looking for something new and I love cabbage. I think you will read this and think that can't be good but give it a try and you will be a believer.

Ingredients For schwein in einer decke/ pigs in a blanket

  • 1 lg
    head of cabbage
  • 1 c
    uncooked rice
  • 1 lb
    ground beef, or bacon, or both/ i use both
  • 1 lg
    chopped onion
  • 1 pinch
    salt and pepper, i add a pinch over each cabbage
  • 2 c
    vinegar and water

How To Make schwein in einer decke/ pigs in a blanket

    Cook the cabbage head in boiling water only long enough so that the leaves can be removed.Cool the leaves, cut part of the heavy vein from the leaf.

    Cook the rice until about half done, drain and cool. Lay a leaf of cabbage flat, put 1 tablespoon cooked rice, some chopped onion, hamburger and/or bacon in the leaf and add salt and pepper to taste. Fold the leaf around the filling, turn upside down and place in a pan. When pan is about 3/4 full, add a liquid of vinegar and water. Bake in oven until done, about 1 hour.
