I don't know if this is the way they do it in Philly, but this is how I do it.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

With steak, gooey cheese, caramelized onions, and a hint of heat, this is a great cheesesteak sandwich. Partially freezing the beef before slicing is a great tip. It helps to slice the beef very thin. Once sauteed with onions, the meat is flavorful and juicy. On top, the Swiss cheese gets nice and melty. While not the traditional cheese, it's super tasty. This is an easy way to make a delicious cheesesteak.

Test Kitchen Tips
Instead of placing the sandwich in the microwave, we put ours under the broiler to melt the cheese.
  • Slicing the frozen beef.
    1
Sliced beef thin, about 1/2 inch wide and 1/4 thick. This is easier to do if it's partially frozen.
  • Slicing the onion.
    2
Sliced onion in half, then sliced the halves.
  • Seasonings and garlic added to the beef.
    3
Add seasonings and garlic to your beef and mix well.
  • Adding onions to the browned beef.
    4
Cook beef for 15 minutes or until brown. Then add onions.
  • Continuing to cook down the onions.
    5
Don't overcook the onions, cook for another 5 minutes.
  • Meat and Swiss cheese placed on a roll.
    6
Add your meat to the bun and top with cheese.
  • Melting the cheese on the sandwich.
    7
You may want to microwave for about 30-45 seconds to melt the cheese. Enjoy!!
