Ingredients For jenn's basic chili

  • 1 lb
    mild breakfast sausage
  • 1 lb
    ground beef
  • 1 md
    onion, chopped
  • 1
    garlic clove, minced
  • 1 sm
    green bell pepper
  • 1 sm
    red bell pepper
  • 1 sm
    orange bell pepper
  • 28 oz
    can diced tomato, undrained (chili flavor)
  • 16 oz
    can dark red kidney beans
  • 16 oz
    can light red kidney beans
  • 16 oz
    can southwestern style black beans
  • 1 Tbsp
    chili powder
  • 2 tsp
    ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp
    cayenne pepper
  • 1 c
    water

How To Make jenn's basic chili

    Sauté sausage & ground beef, onion, peppers & garlic in a large, heavy saucepan until browned, stirring to crumble sausage; drain excess grease.

    Combine sausage mixture with remaining ingredients in a large stockpot.

    Cover & simmer 1-1 ½ hours.

    This can also be done in a crockpot on low for several hours (the longer it cooks the more time the spices have to stew!)
