I tried this with my family and they liked it. The brown gravy for these is pretty good all on its own since it's reliant on the pan drippings, but if you have it, just a splash of Kitchen Bouquet adds a bit more depth and is delicious. If you find that you need a binder, add some fresh bread crumbs to the ground beef. If using pre-made hamburger steak patties, omit the onion, and egg and sprinkle both sides of the patties with the seasoned salt, garlic powder, and pepper, pressing in the seasoning a bit. Then dip each patty in the flour and proceed.

How To Make hamburger steak with creamy onion gravy

  • 1
Heat the oil over medium high in a large heavy-bottomed stainless skillet.
  • 2
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the ground chuck, 3/4 cup chopped onion, egg, 1/4 tsp seasoned salt, garlic powder, and pepper to taste.
  • 3
    Shape into 4 to 6 equal-sized patties.
  • 4
Measure 1/2 cup of flour. Dip each patty into the flour coating both sides.
  • 5
Cook until browned on both sides; remove and set aside.
  • 6
Slice the remaining onions. Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook over medium heat; stirring regularly. Add mushrooms if desired.
  • 7
Cook until both are lightly caramelized.
  • 8
Whisk together the beef broth and water with 1/4 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt, and pepper to taste until combined.
  • 9
Slowly pour the mixture into the skillet with the onions and stir constantly until the mixture begins to thicken. The brown gravy is good all on its own, but if you have it add 1 tsp of Kitchen Bouquet for additional depth.
  • 10
Return the hamburger steaks to the gravy and bring to a simmer.
  • 11
Cook, covered, for about 20 minutes longer.
  • 12
Serve with mashed potatoes and some green beans or a mixed garden salad on the side.
