This is an excellent recipe for all those upcoming Autumn days where the days are short, the nights are long, and the temperature begins dropping. You can vary the spices and veggies to suit your own tastes and serve it large bowls with plenty of fresh-baked crusty bread on the side. I do not have a lot of images for this recipe, but the final image says it all… Yummy. So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

Ingredients For autumn essentials: hamburger stew

  • PLAN/PURCHASE
  • 1 Tbsp
    flour, all-purpose variety
  • 1 lb
    ground beef, 80/20
  • 1/2 md
    yellow onion, grated
  • 2 clove
    garlic, minced
  • 28 oz
    diced tomatoes, 1 can with juice
  • 4 md
    carrots, thickly sliced
  • 4
    celery ribs, thickly sliced
  • 1/2 c
    peas, fresh or frozen
  • 2 md
    potatoes, cubed, peeled or not
  • 2 c
    beef stock, not broth
  • 1 Tbsp
    tomato paste
  • DRY SPICE MIX
  • 1 Tbsp
    dried oregano
  • 1 tsp
    dried parsley
  • 1/2 tsp
    dried rosemary, crushed
  • 1/2 tsp
    dried thyme
  • 1 - 2 pinch
    cayenne pepper
  • salt, kosher variety, to taste
  • black pepper, freshly ground, to taste

How To Make autumn essentials: hamburger stew

    You can make this recipe in a single pot. I would suggest a good soup pot with a lid, like a Dutch oven.

    Gather your ingredients (mise en place).

    Add the hamburger, onions, garlic, and tomato paste in a pot over medium heat, sprinkle on the flour and cook until the meat browns.

    If the meat is greasy drain before proceeding to the next step.

    Add all of the remaining ingredients, mix, then bring up to a boil and reduce the heat to a simmer.

    Cover until the veggies begin to soften, about 20 – 30 minutes.

    Uncover and simmer until the stew begins to thicken, about an additional 20 minutes.

    While the soup is simmering, taste for proper seasoning.
